Phase I/II Trials Plasma HIV RNA CD4 cell count After two weeks of ritonavir treatment 1- to 2-log decrease Approximately 200-cell increase after 2 to 4 weeks Clinical improvement seen in some patients

Ritonavir side effects: Nausea, diarrhea, perioral parasthesia, increased transaminases, raised triglycerides; generally well tolerated.Ritonavir resistance: Over time and as a function of dose, viral load and CD4 cell count tended to return to baseline values and viral susceptibility weakened.
